Children have opportunities to read a wide range of genres (including poetry, narrative, information texts and drama) and are helped to analyse them through a variety of activities (eg discussion and role play). They then use their understanding to compose writing in the different genres, which are linked to the class theme. This ensures the children are writing for a purpose and that purpose is meaningful to them. Much of the children’s writing is cross curricula. Some specific skills (eg spelling, punctuation and grammar) are taught alongside this process, consolidating the development of their compositional skills.
